Rhinitis is the inflammation of the nasal mucous membranes. Rhinitis can be divided into two groups, Allergic Rhinitis and Non-Allergic Rhinitis.
Dust Mite |
|
Allergic Rhinitis occurs when the body's immune system over-reacts to specific, non-infectious particles in the air around us such as pollens, molds, dust mites, animal hair, chemicals, smoke, foods and medicines. This over-reaction causes inflammation of the mucous membranes of the nose, eyes, Eustachian tubes, middle ear, sinuses and pharynx.
During an allergic attack, our body's release a number of chemicals, one of them is histamine, which opens the blood vessels, causing skin redness itching, swelling of affected tissues, mucus production, hives, rashes and other symptoms. When this occurs in the nose it causes sneezing and congestion.
Seasonal Allergic Rhinitis or Hayfever occurs in spring or late summer and is caused by hypersensitivity to pollens.
Perennial Allergic Rhinitis occurs all year round and can be caused by sensitivity to pet dander, mold, houseplants, dust, carpeting and upholstery.
Non-Allergic Rhinitis is not as well understood. Although it is not triggered by an allergy, the symptoms are often the same as seen with Allergic Rhinitis. A variety of factors may trigger symptoms of Non-Allergic Rhinitis including:
- Infections
- Environmental irritants
- Medications
- Hormonal changes
- Temperature changes
