Deviated Septum
The nasal septum is the wall dividing the nasal cavity into two halves. A deviated septum occurs when the septum is shifted away from the midline.
A deviated septum makes it difficult to breath through your nose and causes poor drainage of the sinuses, resulting in repeated sinus infections. This condition can lead to snoring and cause Post Nasal Drip (excess mucus draining down the back of your throat).
Septal deviation can be caused
by injury to the septum
(a punch to the nose). If your deviation is severe enough it could cause an obstruction to the nasal drainage and mimic Sinusitis.
Deviated septum can be fixed with a surgical procedure called septoplasty. Septal deviations commonly occur due to nasal trauma.
Nasal Polyps
Nasal polyps are shaped like teardrops and form as outgrowths on the mucous membranes of the nose and often occurs at the site of edematous tissue. Nasal Polyps usually occur at the ostium
(small opening that allows for free flow of air and mucus)
of the Maxillary Sinuses which creates an anatomical or mechanical obstruction for the flow of mucus causing Post Nasal Drip (excess mucus dripping down the back of your throat), facial pain or pressure and nasal blockage.
A higher incidence of Nasal Polyps are found in middle aged men and asthmatics.

Turbinate's
The turbinate's are three bony projections in the nasal passage. The turbinate's increase the surface area in the nasal cavity, filters and warms the air that passes through it. When they become infected by Allergens, the turbinate's swell and cause an obstruction of the mucus flow. The swelling of the turbinate's can also cause nasal blockage.
Concha Bullosa
A concha bullosa is a balloon-like structure that develops in the middle turbinate with a thin, bony lining.
You can be symptom free or you could have pressure exerted on adjacent tissue which will cause facial pain or pressure and nasal blockage. Large Concha Bullosa's can contribute to sinus congestion and sinus pain. They can be easily corrected with an Endoscopic sinus surgery.
Tumors
Tumors defined in simple terms, are a swelling. When a tumor grows in the ostium (a small opening in the sinuses where drainage occurs), the sinuses become obstructed. The normal flow of the air into the sinuses and mucus drainage out of the sinus becomes hindered. Then the blocked mucus becomes infected, this causes more inflammation and swelling. This eventually leads to Sinusitis.
